The Sacrament of Holy Communion is generally received for the first time in the spring of second grade. All children preparing for this sacrament must attend Religious Education for two years as per the Guidelines of the Archdiocese of New York. Parents are encouraged to pray with their child at home, attend Mass regularly and attend the Communion Retreat with their child.
Children and parents will attend a Retreat on SATURDAY, APRIL 15 from 9 - noon. We will begin with an instructional mass at 9am then rotate through several stations in preparation for first communion.
This year, we have scheduled Communion to be celebrated in the Faith Community of the parish. Families can select the weekend they prefer and the mass that they wish to attend. The celebration will be with the community. 10 children with their families will be scheduled for each mass...5pm, 9am or 11am. Families will be assigned a pew and will sit with their child. The following dates are planned:
April 29 5pm
April 30 9 am & 11am
May 6 5pm
May 7 9am & 11am
May 13 5pm
May 14 9am & 11am
Weekly Mass attendance is expected - The decision to attend Mass weekly shows your child that we have a Savior who loves us and wants to be with us on Sundays and forever!
Children will make a communion banner with their name and something that represents Jesus...a cross, candle, light etc. at home and will bring to their communion mass.
Pew Banner Instructions can be downloaded below.
We will hold a special parent/child night for a Pottery Retreat with Mr. Ray Boswell on March 22. All families will attend the same session at 6pm in the church.
Our annual Communion Retreat with instructional mass will be held on April 15 from 8:45am - noon. Children are asked to come with a parent or another special adult to experience the day in preparation for their first Holy Communion.
